President Obama attended the Clinton Global Initiative recently in New York speaking to the audience on the troubling issue of human trafficking, a politically-correct word for modern-day slavery. Obama announced administration support to strengthen efforts to assist victims and a focus on acknowledging that human trafficking is being ignored in the U.S.
Consumers of fake luxury brands, and even knocks-offs of less expensive items, are still greatly unaware of the link between modern-day slavery and the cheap prices paid for knock-offs on the streets of New York and elsewhere. Even more important than harm to the brand owners, consumers of these items are often supporting organized crime that holds young children hostage in order to manufacture these not-so-fabulous fake goods.
